ADELPHIA CABLE CO.

APPEARS TO BE AROUND A 50 TO 65 FOOT TOWER
( K3SAM Photos )

Although this is not part of the Westmoreland County Radio System, I thought I would give you just a bit of background on this tower and company.  I do not speak from experience so I could be completely wrong but I remember about 38 years ago this tower suddenly appeared on the Donahue Road between Latrobe and Greensburg, Pa.  All of a sudden this small company called HIGHLAND VIDEO appeared.  They began knocking at doors all over in an attempt to sell "TV Signals" to us, boasting better signals and a few more channels (just look at all the antennas, lol).  Anyhow, sooner or later people started to ADD this service to the standard antenna system already on top of most peoples homes.  Most people purchased this service because something called "HBO" or Home Box Office was offered for $5 more.

I don't remember the year but HIGHLAND VIDEO was then bought out or purchased by Adelphia Cable Co. and then all HELL broke lose.  Besides doubling or even tripling the monthly bill, installers at Adelphia were told to CUT the wires from the Antennas mounted on top of their customer's homes.  That leaves only one choice, ADELPHIA !  That was told to me by several Adelphia Cable Installers, not just one.  I was one of those who fell victim to this scam.  After complaining to Adelphia, they came to my Derry home and put new cable from my brand new VHF/UHF antenna back into my home.
(I no longer own that home.  I had it a long time ago when I was handsome.)

To date I still think they either cut the cable or take down the roof top antenna on houses unless you tell them otherwise.  Naughty Naughty !
(recently purchased by Comcast)

This site is also on the Donahue Road between Latrobe and Greensburg, Pa. and has absolutely nothing to do with the Westmoreland County Radio System.
I am putting it here because I thought you might like to know what it does.

Formerly known as West Penn Power Company, they use to pay a horrible amount of money to the phone company to transfer billing information back and forth between their Latrobe office and their Greensburg office.  A friend of mine by the name of Tim told me that they built these towers to act as a relay station between the two buildings so that they could eliminate the phone company, saving them millions of dollars.  You can find the same funny looking radar antennas (gigahertz band) on each of their buildings.
These are two way (duplex) data-transfer radio systems.
(I think it was because they didn't have enough money to pay the phone company!)

You will see that no antenna was seen however I happen to know for a fact they have one.  Somewhere on top of the building should be a low band VHF Antenna for 33.70 Mhz and the Zone Frequencies.  They also have a VHF Antenna on top of the building for 154.740 Mhz Derry Police.  I just wasn't feeling good enough to climb on top of the building to find out what is what, besides Officer GM would probably stick me in a cell for a few years !  Hey GM, where's the coffee ??

No antenna seen here either but it was the angle I was taking the picture from.  The car was going 80 MPH and I had my head out the sun roof.  Hell, I almost hit the kid on the bike !
